Benefits of ICEVI membership
Our current organisational members
January 30 2008
Dear Colleague,
The Pacific Regional Committee of ICEVI seeks your support in improving the educational opportunities of children with vision impairments in the Pacific Region. As reported recently by Larry Campbell, ICEVI's President, the current situation of the children with vision impairments is highly disturbing. Our region's ICEVI Perth Forum in January 2007 highlighted that less than half of the 12 Pacific Island nations provide any form of schooling for pre-school and school-age children with vision impairments and many of these countries need assistance with disability-specific teacher training and provision of the necessary resources to enable access to the prescribed curriculum.
In July 2006, ICEVI, in partnership with the World Blind Union, launched the Education for all Children with Vision Impairment by 2015 (EFA-VI) campaign at its World Congress in Malaysia. Its purpose is to increase enrolments and retention rates of children with vision impairments in schools around the world. This agenda includes awareness-raising and assisting governments to improve school and curriculum access and resource provision. Time and again research has shown the link between poverty and illiteracy. For the thousands of children with vision impairments in our region, this cycle of poverty and illiteracy is likely to repeat itself unless some dramatic interventions are made immediately.
Your ICEVI Pacific Regional Committee has started implementing the EFA-VI global campaign in our Region. As a first step, it hosted the Forum in Perth in January 2007 mentioned above. This was well attended by representatives of international governments and non-government organisations working in education and disability. Particular areas of identified need at the event include training in orientation and mobility, braille code, braille literacy, early childhood intervention and education, curriculum modification, access technology (high and low-tech), and the provision of braille and large print texts. There is no doubt that Australian, New Zealand, and Pacific Island organisations and individuals with knowledge and skills in these areas can make an enormous contribution to improving the lives of many children with vision impairments and their families living in poverty in the Pacific Region.
During 2007, your ICEVI Pacific Regional Committee has focussed on awareness-raising about ICEVI as an organisation, and the reasons why the EFA-VI global campaign is so important to us. In 2008, the Pacific Committee will implement the EFA-VI campaign in a number of countries in our Region. This initiative will include supporting the development of education plans in selected countries and providing training programs and advice on human and physical resource development.
The ICEVI Pacific Regional Committee invites you to join us in our united efforts to improve education access for the 90% of pre-school and school-age children with vision impairments who are currently not receiving an education in the Pacific island nations. The EFA-VI campaign is ambitious, and with adequate support and funding, we believe a significant difference can be made to the lives of children and families living in some of the poorest communities in our Region.
You are invited to become a member of ICEVI for the period July 2007 – March 2009 at the special discount price of AUD$20.00. This price includes an electronic copy of The Educator, ICEVI's quarterly journal. If you would prefer a "hard copy" of the Educator, please add an additional $35.00 to your membership subscription.
A list of membership benefits is attached. Please note that all subscriptions received from the Pacific Region will be used specifically for the EFA-VI campaign in the Pacific.
Enclosed is the special offer membership subscription form for the July 2007-March 2009 period. For more information about the work of ICEVI and its EFA-VI global campaign, please visit the websites www.icevi.org and www.icevipacific.org.au.
